The body in the Collegiata and the shadow of the Munaciello
At the heart of the village stands the Collegiata, a place of faith and community memory. Oral tradition preserves the story of a body believed to be incorrupt, often identified as Canon Antonio Gaetano Domenico Gravina, who died in 1711, although its true identity remains mysterious.
The canon is said to have appeared in a local woman’s dream, warning her that young men had placed a burning oil lamp on his body. When the chapel was opened, the garments had been consumed by fire while the body remained untouched.
From that story his figure became associated with the Munaciello, the small spirit of Campanian folklore that, according to popular memory, still watches over the alleys and sacred walls of Casamale.
