The History of the Festa delle Lucerne

A journey through history, tradition, faith and identity in the heart of one of Campania’s most evocative festivals.

Read the story

When the village goes dark

Memory lights up.

For a few evenings, Borgo Casamale changes rhythm. Modern lights give way to small flames, the alleys fill with warm shadows and every courtyard becomes part of an ancient story.

The Festa delle Lucerne is not only an event to watch. It is a tradition to walk through slowly, guided by light, stone and the voice of a community that continues to preserve its identity.

The origins

Between popular devotion and rites of light.

The Festa delle Lucerne is deeply connected to devotion to Our Lady of the Snow, celebrated on 5 August. Over time, the religious celebration intertwined with an older popular language: fire, oil, night, protection of the home and the return of light.

Its strength comes from this encounter: faith on one side, rural and community memory on the other. Lighting an oil lamp meant illuminating, but also entrusting a thought, preserving a presence and keeping a promise alive.

The oil lamp

Not just a lamp.

Before electricity, the oil lamp accompanied everyday family life. It lit homes, vigils, prayers and winter evenings. During the Festa delle Lucerne, it becomes a symbol of memory, presence and continuity.

The village transforms

Light draws another time.

During the festival, Borgo Casamale is not simply decorated. It is transformed. Arches, stairways, windows and narrow passages become part of a living scenography built with simple materials and almost ritual care.

Darkness is not absence: it is preparation. Only when artificial light withdraws can the oil lamps restore the village’s most intimate atmosphere.

The courtyards

The festival enters the homes.

One of the most moving aspects of the Festa delle Lucerne is the opening of the courtyards. Private spaces become places of meeting, storytelling and sharing.

Each courtyard tells something: a family, a tradition, an installation, a memory. Here the festival reveals its most authentic character.

The lighting ritual

Every flame is a fragment of memory.

The light of the oil lamps does not overwhelm the village. It accompanies it, reveals details, warms ancient walls and invites visitors to slow down, observe and listen.

The community

A festival that is not only organised: it is preserved.

The Festa delle Lucerne lives thanks to the participation of residents, families, associations and volunteers. For months the village prepares: installations are imagined, alleys are cared for, lamps are arranged and memories are shared.

This community dimension makes it different from a simple event. The festival lives because each edition is handed from one generation to the next.

05

The experience

It is not only watched. It is crossed.

Those who arrive in Casamale during the festival find a sequence of lights, details, sounds and encounters. Every step opens a different perspective: an arch, a window, a spiral of flames, a street full of people.

The Festa delle Lucerne is a slow experience. It asks for time, attention and respect. And it is this slowness that makes it unforgettable.

Light, Land and Vesuvius

Some traditions keep living every time a small flame is lit again.

During the Festa delle Lucerne, Vesuvius speaks through light, stone, hands and the memory of its people. It also speaks through flavours: the traditions that Nero Vesuviano and Radici want to preserve.
